Sydney's impressive shopping strips are comparable to some of the best shopping districts in the world and contain many major high-street names, department stores and independent Sydney shops. Home to all of the biggest names in fashion and jewellery, Sydney has a number of major shopping strips, centres, shopping malls and pedestrianised shopping districts where you can find a world-class selection of shops.
Ranging from designer labels to Aboriginal art galleries, antiques stores to gift shops, Sydney's shops are extremely varied and very popular, with locals, tourists and visitors to the Sydney area. Shopping has become a major pastime with residents in Sydney and many of Sydney's locals regard shopping as a recreational activity.
The Central Business District (CBD) in Sydney is overflowing with department stores, pedestrianised shopping strips, outstanding shopping malls, chain stores, fashion boutiques, street cafés and friendly restaurants. Sydney's inner-city shopping strips are more relaxed and include areas such as Glebe, Newtown and Paddington. Most shops in Sydney are open from 09:30 to 18:00 Monday to Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, and until 21:00 on Thursday. Sunday trading in Sydney is becoming increasingly popular, but opening hours are generally shorter than the rest of the week, with shops open until around 16:00 or 17:00.
